  Music Ministry

It has been said that singing is twice praying, or praying twice, either way our goal is to make a joyful noise to the Lord. We are blessed at St. Pius X with many musicians, some professional, most not, but all dedicated to praising God through their music. If you would like to share your musical talent with our parish community take a look at the short biographies of our musical groups listed below. If you're not able to make a commitment to a group, we could still use your musical talent on an occasional basis. Contact our Music Director John Pottkotter, jpiano2@aol.com, or call the rectory office during normal business hours for more information. Music groups and cantors can find a music schedule for upcoming Masses by visiting the Mass Music Schedule page.

Adult Choir

The birth of the St. Pius X Adult choir coincides with the establishment of the parish in 1958. The first Masses of the Parish were celebrated at French Run School, and the choir participated in these early Masses. A vivid memory of years ago was singing at St. Theresa Shrine on East Broad St. The acoustics in that chapel are fantastic, and we all felt like we sounded like a bunch of pros. Other performances outside our parish included singing at Resurrection Cemetery, at Seton Parish, and at the Jubilee 2000 celebration at St. John Arena. Recently we have been singing at Holy Cross Cemetary for special holiday Masses such as Memorial Day and Labor Day.

This year’s roster lists 29 members, with several new additions since this roster went to press. As we continue to add to our musical repertoire, be part of our fun, hardworking group. For information, call John Pottkotter, Coordinator of Music (614) 501-0104. We practice from 7:15-9 pm Wednesdays in the church and sing the 8:30 or 10:15 am Mass on Sundays from September to June.

Children's Choir
Children's choir is open to all 3rd to 6th graders that are members of St. Pius Parish! We practice Saturday mornings beginning in November. Instrumentalists are welcome!!! Along with several other Masses we also sing during one of the Masses on Christmas Day! Need more information? Contact John Pottkotter, music coordinator. Phone 501-0104 or email jpiano2@aol.com.
Joy in the Moring
Joy in the Morning came together in the summer of 1972. St. Pius was about to add a Saturday evening Mass at 5:00. Fr. Peter Essman asked a wonderful young couple, Tom and Loretta Feller to help pull together a group of musical vagabond teenagers to lead the liturgy in song. The Feller’s took us on a retreat to give us all a chance to get to know each other and to bond. We awoke them at 5:00 AM the first morning singing in four-part harmony. Loretta immediately said, I guess we should just call you “Joy In the Morning”, and that’s how the group was born. The group has a history of consisting of young people High School age and older under the leadership of several adults, and those high school students have now become the adult leadership themselves. The group also provided a strong spiritual support system for the young people and adults involved, and most of us have continued that spiritual sharing within our own communities as we continue in our adult lives

Currently Debbie Liffick jointly coordinates “Joy” with the help of Traci Kister and Karen Lopo, all of who were former members. We have the additional vocal talents of Katie Curry, Debbie Riederer, and Lisa and Chelsey Ludwig. We also have the additional guitar talents of Matt Kessler, and Jim Coen who will also add his banjo to our sound. We even have one of the regular choir members, Clarke Branch, who is dropping in whenever his schedule allows joining us with his guitar and vocal talents. In addition we always have an open door policy for any of our old members who wish to join us at any given time especially during the holiday seasons.

Our music selections are from the Respond and Acclaim hymnbook used in our parish liturgies, as well as many other contemporary resources both old and new alike. Our group also plays for weddings, other special occasions, and we love being a part of the combined musical liturgies that occur throughout the year within our own parish. Several of us are also involved in the music portion of liturgies for the Parish School of Religion, the Sunday Children’s Liturgy program, and serve as Liturgical ministers within the parish.

We encourage and welcome any individual High School age and older who is interested in sharing the liturgy through song or instrument to come and join us. Currently practice is held on Thursdays whenever schedules permit, and we gather in the bride’s room at church for practice time every Saturday before Mass. We would love to have you join us. If you are interested, you may contact Debbie Liffick at (614) 759-9139.

Merging Spirits
Youth choir or, “Merging Spirits” was formed in March, 2002 to give young adults a voice in our music ministry at St. Pius. We are closely connected to the Youth Ministry program in our parish under the direction of Mrs. Judi Bryant. We sing the 12:00 pm Mass on the second Sunday of the month and practice on the Sunday before (the first Sunday) in the church. We are the only group using percussion and electric guitar, combined with piano. We use music from the Spirit and Song series by Oregon Catholic Press. This group offers flexibility for those wishing to also serve as greeters, servers, eucharistic ministers, and lectors at different Masses.

If you are in the 7th grade and older, please give this group a try. The single practice once a month gives busy students some relief from night practices on school days. We are searching for young people willing to serve the Lord in song and action.

For further information, please call Judi Bryant at the Office of Religious Education at 614-864-3505 or John Pottkotter, Coordinator of Music at 614-501-0105 or E-mail at jpiano2@aol.com.

New Creation
The New Creation Contemporary Ensemble was formed in 1972 at St. Pius X parish. The group has undergone many changes through the years and has been under the direction of Mari Radel and Patty McMenemy for the past 28 years. They both began singing with the New Creation when they were 12!

The New Creation started out as the leaders of song at the 1:15 Mass many years ago, before moving to the 12:30 Mass where they led the congregation in song for over 20 years. The group moved to the 11:00 Mass several years ago but since the mass schedule change will be sharing the 10:15 time slot with the adult choir.

The New Creation consists of several skilled musicians ranging in age from 18 up. We welcome adults of any age who have a love for liturgical music, are passionate about the liturgy itself, and who are willing to apply themselves to learning the many beautiful pieces of music that have been written for post Vatican II celebrations.

The New Creation welcomes musicians such as violinists, bassists, additional guitarists, and of course, additional singers willing to commit to a bi-weekly Wednesday rehearsal, and weekly Mass commitment.

Our music is chosen from the Respond and Acclaim Music Issue used by St. Pius X parish, as well as most liturgical music written in the past 30 years. We are very focused on leading the people of St. Pius X in song and encouraging them to participate in the liturgy. We love to sing harmonies and learn new music. As a matter of fact, we were asked to play at the 2003 Dublin Irish Festival and learned some new Irish music this year.

Anyone interested in joining the New Creation should contact Mari Radel at 868-0347 or Patty McMenemy at 866-2475.
